Which Paving Material Performs Better in Winter?

In most cases of developing or restoring a property, pavement is going to be an important factor. From sidewalks and driveways, to patios, parking lots, ADA ramps, and more, paving generally plays a large role in real estate construction and renovation. This time of year, proprietors are asking questions about pavement installation, including which paving material is a better choice for winter weather conditions.

Asphalt or Concrete?

The two primary categories of pavement are asphalt and concrete, both of which retain separate qualities and properties, as well as, contain a list of sub-categories of paving materials. It is important to understand the differences and similarities among the paving options available to choose the best material for your property.

Asphalt Options

There are three main types of asphalt materials to choose from. These include hot-mix asphalt, cold-mix asphalt, and UPM asphalt. There is also warm asphalt mix.

Hot mix asphalt is poured at a high temperature of 300 to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, and is only applied when outdoor temperatures exceed 40 degrees Fahrenheit because it cools so rapidly. In the United States, it is the most common method of asphalt paving used for high-traffic pavements like highways, roads, interstates, and more.

Warm mix asphalt is manufactured and shipped at lower temperatures, usually between 200 and 250 degrees Fahrenheit, and it has a slower cooling rate than HMA. This means it can be used in colder seasons or climates for road, highway, and interstate construction.

Cold patch asphalt is emulsified in water using soap, and then mixed with an aggregate, usually concrete, to render a stronger, more durable paving material. It is mostly used to fill potholes on a year-round basis. There are various grades, all designed for specific climates. There is a specially-formulated winter grade for temperatures of 40 degrees Fahrenheit or below, a spring and fall grade for temperatures between 40 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit, and a summer mix for temperatures between 60 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

UPM® permanent patching material is manufactured by the company, Unique Paving Materials, hence the acronym “UPM.” Although one of the most popular products, there are various brands offered on the market aside from UPM® permanent patching material, such as EZ Street® and Aquaphalt®.

Concrete Options

There are several different types and grades of concrete available. The type chosen depends on the application and similar factors. Common concrete options include normal strength concrete, plain or ordinary concrete, reinforced concrete, pre-stressed concrete, precast concrete, light-weight concrete, high-density concrete, and air-entrained concrete. Grade options range in ratios of cement, sand, and aggregates, from M5 to M70.

The Dangers of Neglecting School Parking Lot Repair

School is officially back in session for students of all ages! Whether children, teenagers, or adults, it is important for school complexes to remain safe and free of hazards. And this all starts on the outside, in the parking lot! In fact, this vital priority extends to the outer areas of the school, including playgrounds, sports complexes, walkways, and even parking lots.

Sadly, school parking lot deterioration and damage is a maintenance require that is often overlooked or put on the back burner. And when this happens, parking lot damages only worsen, and thus, increase in price and time the longer they are neglected. If you are a school property manager or owner, it is in your best interest to ensure your parking lot and walkways are ready to take on the full school year.

School Parking Lot Hazards

There are several pedestrian dangers that lurk in a school parking lot, especially during the busy morning and afternoon hours when drop-offs and pick-ups are taking place. And when pavement is not well-kept or in poor condition, it can further emphasize these hazards. A parking lot with pavement intact assists in smoother and safer traffic among drivers and pedestrians.

The most common hazards in pavement that can jeopardize student and traffic safety on school grounds include pot holes, large cracks, deep crevices, crumbled pavement, faded road striping, unclear crosswalks and bus lanes, degraded curbs, crumbled sidewalks, insufficient signs, and more. Pot holes are the most common problem for parking lots. These can range in size and cause serious slip, trip, and fall injuries.

They can also so severe damage to vehicles. Large cracks and crevices pose the same threat among drivers and pedestrians alike. As for deteriorated and crumbled pavement, namely curbs and sidewalks, accidents and injuries are frequent occurrences. Even more dangerous are faded road striping and signs. When bus, parking, lane, and traffic paint are faded and unclear, disaster looms at any moment. Sometimes, schools can be placed under violation for having signs that do not meet fire code and ADA standards. This could lead to lawsuits and subsequent penalties.

Common Types of Porous Pavement

In our last blog, we discussed the various ins and outs of pervious pavement, namely, all of the wonderful benefits and applications it offers. Permeable Concrete Grades and Applications

There are several types of pervious concrete, all of which have their own unique set of properties, and therefore, separate applications. Depending on the type of concrete work you are interested in having done, your choice of permeable pavement will vary greatly. Below are the most common types of porous pavements, what they are conventionally used for, and why they are recommended for such applications.

➤ Bound Recycled Glass Porous Pavement

This type of porous pavement is comprised of recycled glass, and bound together using resins and similar kinds of binding agents. Since it is a recycled product, it is a great initiative for the environment. Common applications include road and pedestrian paving.

➤ Permeable Clay Brick Pavers

Permeable clay brick pavements are made from fired clay. Similar to interlocking pavers, clay brick pavers can be laid out in custom patterns and filled in with organic material like soil or grass, or with cement and aggregate material. These are mostly used for decorative or architectural applications.

➤ Permeable Interlocking Concrete Pavers

Similar to clay brick pavers, interlocking pavements can be laid out in custom patterns and filled in with organic material like soil or grass, and they are mostly used for decorative or architectural applications in public areas, like parks, plazas, and pools.

➤ Plastic Grids

Plastic grid pavements offer 100% permeability, making them perfect for areas where water runoff and drainage are issues. They are gaining popularity due to LEED project requirements. They are commonly used to reinforce gravel driveways, parking lots, and fire lanes.

➤ Porous Asphalt

Porous asphalt is unique because it is not concrete, but rather, a bitumen mixture. It’s most common application is for highway and interstate drainage and water runoff.

➤ Porous Turf

Porous turf is a type of pavement that is mostly used in areas where parking it an occasional occurrence, such as state fairs, carnivals, churches, stadiums, and marinas.

➤ Resin-Bound Paving

Resin-bound pavements are pavements made aggregate and held together with a clear resin.  They are commonly used for pedestrian and road paving, such as sidewalks, walkways, driveways, and parking lots.

➤ Single-Sized Aggregate

Single-sized aggregate is a type of pavement that does not have any binder material. For this reason, it is it commonly referred to as loose gravel.  It’s most common applications are for low-speed areas, like sidewalks and driveways.

When Must a Paving Project Be Postponed?

No matter how much planning you do for your pavement repair or remodel, you can’t always trust the weather forecast. There are times when a paving project must be put on hold and rescheduled due to common, uncontrollable elements like rain, wind, snow, and more. Additionally, there are non-elemental circumstances that can also impede paving plans.

Continue reading to learn the most common situations that may require you to delay your paving project.

Indianapolis Commercial Paving 317-549-1833

Rain and Precipitation

When it comes to paving and precipitation, the two do not go hand-in-hand. You cannot move forward with a paving project if it is raining, snowing, hailing, sleeting, or even lightly sprinkling. In fact, any type of wet conditions are not well-suited for paving, neither asphalt nor concrete. For instance, if the ground is still wet from a storm that came through a day before, paving plans cannot, and should not, commence.

So why no paving in wetness? Asphalt mixtures contain oil, which repels water. These are not conducive properties if you want to get asphalt to adhere to the ground. If you were to lay asphalt while it was raining or wet, the pavement would develop cracks, and holes as it cures, and quickly lead to pothole formation and similar exponential damages. Overall, rain and precipitation have negative effects on the outcome of a paving project. See our blog, “Will Rain Affect My Newly Laid Asphalt?” to learn more about this topic.

Inclement Weather Conditions

If you have a large-scale paving project in the works, and the time is set to begin during an active tornado warning, there is a good chance it will be delayed. Mild weather is the best weather to perform any paving project, regardless of size or scope. As for large-scale projects, more kinds of heavier machinery and equipment are used, and more staff are needed to carry out the job. This means that hazardous weather conditions, such as tornado warnings, can put contractors at risk, as well as, ultimately affect the outcome of a paving remodel.

Changed Minds

Another common reason why a paving project might need to be postponed is when the client changes their mind about the scope or design of the plan. Since readdressing a previously-agreed upon paving project will mean rewriting the specifications, rerouting the approach, and perhaps even changing the bid, it’s not something that is done last minute on the side of the contractors. Paving contractors will need time to adjust any changes that you might want to make before the project day comes, and this is perfectly acceptable. A good paving company will care more about your ultimate satisfaction than rearranging their schedule by a day or two.

The Best Times of Year to Install New Pavement

Let’s get right to the answer of the classic paving question, “When is the right time of year to install new pavement?” Well, as with any property remodel or construction project, the best times of year to carry them out is when the weather is mild and warm. Primarily, late spring and summer are the most effectual times to pave, however, a warm fall can also be a good time for such projects. Here in Indiana, we can our summers sometimes extend far into September, giving us a Fall October and November, which can make the weather acceptable for pavement work.

Continue reading to learn how weather affects paving work, and when you should have your pavement repairs and installation done this year.

Temperatures for Asphalt Paving

When it comes to paving asphalt, summer is a good time to implement any needed work, including crack filling, pothole repair, overlays, and full-on replacements. This is because an asphalt job renders the best results in temperatures that average around 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Mid-summer is usually the best time for these temperature averages, since August can be too hot and June too rainy.

Winter Cold Patching

If you must have your asphalt pavement worked on in colder weather, it can still be done so long as you hire a reputable and skilled paving company that retains the proper knowledge and resources to do so, correctly. The process of repairing potholes and other surface defects in asphalt is generally performed during warmer seasons because a hot mix product is used to fill in gaps and openings in damaged pavements.

However, with winter cold patching, it is possible to make emergency asphalt repairs in the winter. Also known as cold tar patching, this method of asphalt pothole repair works well in colder temperatures because the actual product is designed with special polymers that render it ready-to-use at all times.

Rainy Weather Conditions

Paving and rain do not go well together. It is not recommended to wait until there is clear weather conditions for an extended period of time on the calendar, before beginning any pavement work. In order for pavement, both concrete and asphalt, to cure properly, the conditions must be free of precipitation. Although a light sprinkle won’t hurt, moderate to heavy rains, or continuous light showers, can jeopardize the structural integrity of paving work, and ultimately, the outer appearance as well. See our blog, “Will Rain Affect My Newly Laid Asphalt?” to learn more.

What You Need to Know About Using Salt on Pavement

There are many misconceptions about using salt and de-icers on pavement. With so many contradicting notions, it can be difficult figuring out whether or not you should salt your asphalt and concrete pavements. And with the current Indianapolis snow forecast, now is the time to clear up any confusion or concerns you’ve had about salting your paved surfaces.

Continue reading to learn what you need to know about using salt on asphalt and concrete this winter season.

Commercial Paving 317-549-1833
Commercial Paving 317-549-1833

Rock salt provides an impactful benefit when it comes to creating safer, more stable road and walkways. However, in order to reap the benefits of salt, it is important to know which types of pavements to use it on, and how to be environmentally conscientious while doing so. Here are the top 4 facts you need to know to ensure you protect your pavements and the surrounding ecosystem:

➠ Salt Can Harm the Environment

It is important to apply salt properly and with the utmost care and attention. Otherwise, it can negatively affect the surrounding environment via water runoff. It can also be toxic to local plants and wildlife. In fact, certain studies have identified an increase in salinity within rivers, lakes, and even drinking water, as a direct result of roadway salting practices.

➠ Salt Will Damage Concrete

Concrete is a porous pavement, which means it has pores that can collect moisture and water. This makes them more vulnerable to freeze-thaw cycles and other intruding constituents. Roadway salts are common culprits behind concrete deterioration because they are acidic and breakdown the adhesive bonds that hold concrete together. As a result, concrete freezes more quickly, thus requiring more salting. Overtime, concrete is damaged if ongoing maintenance is not implemented after every season.

➠ Salt Will Not Damage Asphalt

In contrast to concrete pavements, snow salt will not harm your asphalt surfaces. Hot-mix asphalt pavements are made from stone aggregate, sand, petroleum, and other sturdy constituents, so they will not be affected by salts, de-icers, and freeze-thaw cycles. So if you want to use salt on your asphalt, go right ahead! Just be sure to maintain a clear and controlled boundary to prevent water run-off and environmental damage.

➠ Salt Does Not Create Potholes

Although salt can deteriorate concrete, it does not create potholes. Water must enter into the ground below the pavement to create a pothole. As for salt, it weakens concrete, and can even lead to cracking, crumbling, and fissures; however, those frustrating giant craters are thanks to changing weather, vehicular traffic, and lack of proper pavement maintenance. When it comes to asphalt, salt can only cause deterioration or damage if the pavement is already damaged or compromised.

The Advantages of Thermoplastic Pavement Markings

In a basic sense, thermoplastics are polymers that convert into a liquid when heated, but return to a solid form when cooled. When it comes to roads and other types of paved surfaces, thermoplastic markings play an important role.

Continue reading to learn more about thermoplastic pavement markings, and why they are an essential part of road safety.

Indianapolis Road Marking 317-549-1833

Indianapolis Road Marking 317-549-1833

Although thermoplastics are used widely applied in all sorts of trades, such as medical equipment, machine parts, and packaging, they are very important in the paving industry. In fact, they can even save lives. The process of applying thermoplastics for pavement markings involves heating a special type of road paint called “hot melt marking paint.” This specialized paint is heated to a temperature of 392 degrees Fahrenheit, melting it quickly into liquid that can then cool quickly once set. The result is a thick, bright, reflective, weather-resistant coating.

Road Templates

Pavement symbol and word templates, such as “FIRE LANE”, “NO PARKING”, handicap parking, interstate emblems, and more, make the use of thermoplastic hot melt marking paint much easier and much faster. These templates are filled in with thermoplastic hot melt marking paint to create these bright, reflective road markings we see in parking lots, streets, crosswalks, and highways. After just a few minutes, these markings are completely dried and finished.

Common Thermoplastic Road Markings:

Parking Spots
Reserved Parking
Stop Indicators
Handicap Spots
Fire Lanes
Emergency Vehicle Lanes
Taxi/Bus Lanes
No Parking Zones
Pedestrian Crosswalks
Traffic-Directing Arrows
Highway Divider Lines
Interstate Emblems
Registered Traffic Symbols

Road and Pedestrian Safety

Thermoplastic road markings play an important role in road and pedestrian safety. Their bright, reflective properties make them more visible, especially at night. They are highly reflective against the heads lights on vehicles, aiding pedestrians and cyclists alike. Thermoplastic road markings can also be manufactured in a wide variety of colors, and can last 6 to 8 times longer than standard road paint. They can even be designed with glass beads to create antiskid surfaces and improve traction.

Parking Lot Owners

If you have a commercial or public parking lot, it is wise to consider repainting all of the traffic signs, parking lines, pedestrian crossings, arrows, letters, numbers, and any officially-registered traffic symbols with thermoplastic technology. Many others have chosen thermoplastics, and have had great success. Talk to a licensed and insured Indianapolis paving company for personalized answers and advice for your paved lot.
